Cosmetology Terminology Consumers Should Know
Cosmetologist embrace every aspect of the art; beauty and fashion are major contributions. Hair stylist, Make Up Artist, Fashion Designers and Stylist the major players of this circle must understand, practice, educate, and share their talents of expertise to consumers and individuals who support this industry.

cos-me-tol-o-gist (noun) : an individual who gives beauty treatments (as to skin and hair) - called also beautician, cosmetic treatment of the skin, hair, and nails

Different Areas of Cosmetology:

  • Hair Stylist is an individual who specialize their services in the areas of shampooing, cutting, coloring, and styling hair.
  • Shampoo Technician  is the individual who usually prepares the client for specific procedures requested by the Hair Stylist. Technician duties also include application of the correct shampoo and conditioner for the clients specific hair type.
  •  Manicurist is an individual who specializes in fingernails, cuticle treatments, hand and arm massage, painting nails, applying and removing acrylic nails and skin care.
  • Pedicurist who has a specialty that deals with all of the interest as a Manicurist  and also concentrate on toe nails and foot massage.
  • Facials  is a service that includes the application of treatments to clean and purify the skin of the face around the the eyes and chin. An individual specialty should cover the knowledge of treatments for various skin types and recommendations of products and/or regimens to encourage healthy skin
  • Beauty Therapist  has a broad specialty that include many different procedures and knowledge of all the above areas and specializes in hair removal, skin care, hair care, make up application and much more.


Tips When Choosing The Perfect Fit
Understanding the different roles and titles of individuals in the cosmetology field allows one to choose wisely when receiving and paying for services. Consumers should ask questions in order to analyze the professional's knowledge and understanding of his/her talent. When choosing your Stylist, Manicurist, Pedicurist, Esthetician, and/or Beauty Therapist make sure without a shadow of doubt the individual is a perfect fit for all of your beauty and fashion needs.

 Questions to Ask:

  • How long have you been doing hair? - You are looking for the individual to talk about before he/she became a licensed professional. This will display their true passion.
  • Where did you go to school? - This allows you determine if one studied at a reputable institution.
  • What do you specialize in? - You will be able to decide if the individual will be able to create your desired needs.
  • What is your availability? - You will be able to determine how long you will be getting services and if it will or will not interfere with any other activities or duties you have.
  • Do You have a price list? - This allows you to determine if services provided is in your budget.
Questions You should be Asked:

  • Can you come in for a consultation before I schedule your services?
  • Where and Who did you receive services from previously?
  • What did you like or did not like about your previous services?
  • Do you have any chemicals in your hair, such as: perm, relaxer, color, rinse, highlights, etc?
  • When was your last chemical service?
  • What type of products do you use at home to maintain in between your appointments?
  • Are you on any type of medications and what are they for?
  • What type of job do you have?
  • How often to like to receive services?
  • Tell me a little about yourself, such as: hobby, favorite color, food, music, movies, etc?
